At Henry Clay, our goal in language arts is to increase students’ passion for reading while continuing to develop independent strategic readers who can think critically when reading a text and interpret and respond orally and in writing to text. We foster a love of reading and writing through authentic literacy experiences for each student. Through classroom observations and ongoing assessments, teachers, reading specialists, and administrators are able to collect information about students’ strengths and areas of growth. This information helps determine which instructional resources a student needs to experience optimal growth. While our literacy instruction is based on our students’ needs, all instruction encompasses the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs) and Hanover County expectations.
If your child struggles in reading in general or only with a few skills, his/her teacher will arrange for intervention to take place. Reading resource teachers and homeroom teachers work as a team to make collaborative decisions for each student and choose intervention strategies based on each student’s needs. If you have questions about your child’s current reading progress, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher.
